Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Prud'homme van Reine for identifying the ship in the right foreground as the Maegd van Dordrecht bearing the coat-of-arms of the city of Dordrecht on its stern. The ship was built in 1632 and was originally intended for the Dutch captain, Maerten Harpertsz. Tromp. Carrying forty-two guns and a crew of one hundred and forty, it was one of the largest warships in the Dutch fleet at the time.
