Lot Essay

One of the most successful of the early typewriters designed for the blind, the Typograph was highly praised when displayed in the 1851 Exhibition, and again at the 1862 Exhibition. It produces embossed letters but, as Adler points out, it can be used to produce visible typescript with carbon paper. He refers to en example with the serial number 52; the present machine has anumber 60 stamped into the wooden part of the platen, although there is nothing to indicate whether this is a serial number. A projecting wooden strip at the top of the platen is missing.
