Lot Essay

While Edison Bell held the British patents for both Edison and the Graphophone, it is evident that at least some of their supplies of the latter came from Path. This machine encompasses Graphophone, Path, Edison-Bell and Edison in one; a portmanteau phonograph collection, in fact. To provide the necessary half-speed to the feed-screw, the gear from the great-wheel has been modified. Other improvements include a notched wheel with spring detent for speed adjustment, and a wood drive pulley with a jockey-pulley. A flanged pulley, of no apparent purpose, is also fitted to the winding shaft. The extra height caused by the Diamond A reproducer and its guide rod means that the mechanism can no longer be inverted into the case. The conversion was probably carried out between the two wars, at a time when Edison conversion kits were being sold cheaply as old stock, but that does not explain why so much trouble was taken to convert this machine when secondhand Edison models were readily available.
