Lot Essay

The pricipal side shows a boar hunt; the names of four of the hunters - Polydas, Antiphatas, Polyphas and Eudoros - are inscribed in the archaic Corinthian alphabet. On the other side are three horesmen galloping to the left. Two of their names are inscribed: Pantippos and Polydoros. This image of an ancient hunt must have been resonant with reminders to Hamilton of the many hunting expeditions he had joined, in the company of King Ferdinand IV, hunting boar in the woods above the royal palace at Caserta.
