Lot Essay

The distinctive lion mask mounts on this piece are based on a design for a library table in Thomas Sheraton's Encyclopaedia of 1803-1807 (reproduced in M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture, 1948, fig. 228). A writing-table featureing these mounts is illustrated in C. Claxton Stevens and S. Whittington, 8th Century English Furniture: The Norman Adams Collection, 1983, p.173. A sofa table with these mounts was sold Sotheby's London, 14 June 1985, lot 197.
