A LARGE APULIAN POTTERY AMPHORA ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER
4TH CENTURY B.C.
Side A: a warrior standing with his spear within an Ionic naiskos beside his horse, flanked outside by four female attendant figures, two seated, holding various objects including a phiale, an oinochoe, a fan, and a casket
Side B: four similar female figures to either side of a funerary stele, the stele surmounted by an urn and hung with taeniae
The shoulder decorated with scrolling floral motifs and a central female head in profile, elaborate twin palmettes under each handle, foliate garland beneath the rim, the handles moulded with human mask at join with shoulder, and a foliate motif at join with neck, details in added white and yellow
