This is based on a head of Sappho, the poetess from Lesbos, which was found at Herculaneum in 1753; copies of the head were popular and bronze versions featured in the Neapolitan Chiurazzi catalogues of the late Nineteenth Century. This so-called "Sappho-type" head which is found in other Roman versions was inspired by a Greek original of 5th Century B.C.
