Lot Essay

The motif of clasped hands was seen to symbolise an agreement or contract, and was frequently used in the context of these marriage rings. Cf. F. H. Marshall, Catalogue of the Finger Rings, The British Museum, London, p. 49, no. 276, pl. VII for the type.
