The thick formerly oval gold hoop broadening to the bezel chased with an anchor motif
.5/8 in. (1.6 cm.) internal diam.

Cf. E. Coche de la Ferté, Antique Jewellery from the Second to the Eighth Century, Berne, 1962, pl. VI for a 3rd Century ring with anchor from the De Clercq collection. The anchor was "...the paleochristian symbol of the Cross particularly frequent in the 3rd Century."
