W.H. Ross's Scottish Line began operating in the 1850's and eventually owned an impressive fleet of large iron full-riggers, including a pair of identical sisters named Scottish Hills and Scottish Dales. Built by Oswald at Sunderland in 1883, each was registered at 2,058 tons and measured 277 feet in length with a 40 foot beam. In common with most other ships of the Scottish Line, Scottish Hills was sold to Windam & Co. around the beginning of this centrury and she survived until 1911 when she was broken up.
