Lot Essay

The largest book printed by The Essex House Press, The Prayer Book of King Edward VII was the result of Ashbee's wish to present the Elizabethan text in a form fitting to its majesty, with a new typeface designed specifically for the work, some hundred new illustrations and three new sets of initials. The finished work enjoyed great popularity, and the accolade of the purchase by J. Pierpoint Morgan of 'a dozen copies to give away to the American bishops' (Crawford p. 395).
