JOHN TYLER REMINISCES ABOUT PATRICK HENRY AND JEFFERSON

Former President Tyler furnishes the well known American collector with his memories of another great Viriginian: "[You asked if] I would embody in the form of a letter some of my personal recollections of Patrick Henry... I never had the happiness to see that eloquent man and ardent patriot. He died when I was in my ninth year. My impressions concerning him are derived chiefly from my father, confirmed as his opinions were, by all his contemporaries. He was brought into close fellowship with Mr. Henry in the Legislature of this State [Virginia] during the greater part of the Revolution[ary] war, and between them there existed a friendship, the bonds of which were severed only by death. He was all enthusiasm whenever he spoke of Mr. Henry, of whom to speak, seemed to afford him a pleasure unmatched by his reminiscences of any other person. If among the great actors in the scenes of the Revolution, Mr. Henry had any rival in his affections, that rival was alone to be found in Mr. [Thomas] Jefferson..."
