Autograph manuscript of "Mary and Martha Washington," a dual biography of Martha Washington and Mary Washington (George Washington's mother), with extensive deletions, emendations and revisions (some written on separate pieces of paper and attached to appropriate pages), and interspersed proofs of the engraved illustrations labeled or captioned by Lossing, n.d. [1866?]. 459 pages, 8vo, written on rectos only, minor soiling, enclosed with the drawings (see below) in a blue half morocco gilt protective case, slightly scuffed. [With:] ROSA, H. Thirty-five original pen-and-ink drawings for the illustrations in the book, each signed "H. Rosa," various sizes, on art stock, each captioned by Lossing on verso, the drawings including portraits of Martha and Mary, George Washington's coat of arms, early views of Mount Vernon, etc.
Lossing (1813-1891) was an established engraver, illustrator and popular author on historical subjects; his best known work was the Pictorial Field Book of the American Revolution, published 1850-1852, and still highly regarded today.
