[BRITISH AUTHORS]. DU MAURIER, GEORGE. Autograph manuscript of a portion of an early working draft of his posthumously published novel The Martian (New York: Harper, 1898), n.p., n.d. [c. 1894-5], 5 1/4 pages, folio, in ink on rectos of gray sheets with numerous revisions, a small stain on first page, a few marginal tears, green half morocco slipcase (spine scuffed), with typed transcript, this portion apparently greatly altered in its published form. From the collections of Jerome Kern (his 1929 sale, lot 496) and Dr. Max Thorek (bookplate and two small stamps)--THOMAS BURKE. Autograph manuscript signed of the Limehouse story "Proud Mother" (originally "Mother's Meeting"), London [?1939], 7 pages, 4to, in ink and pencil (1 1/2 pages) on rectos, the last 3 pages on orange paper, with numerous revisions, bound in half tan morocco (spine a bit worn), signed and dated ("Feb. 1939") and inscribed by Burke at top of first page: "This is the only handwritten MS of mine existing -- except for a few pages presented some years ago by request, to the O. Henry Memorial Library," inscribed on front endpaper to Montgomery Evans II: "This MS., one of the only three hand MSS. of mine which have escaped destruction; the others are of later date than 1939...," with the Evans bookplate--RICHARD LE GALLIENNE. Autograph manuscript of his well-known poem "The Decadent to his Soul," n.p., n.d., 4 1/2 pages, 8vo, in ink on rectos of lined paper, a few corrections but a fair copy, a few marginal repairs, first page a little soiled, bound in claret morocco, gilt-lettered, t.e.g. "The Decadent to his Soul" was collected in English Poems (Elkin Mathews, 1892).
