FIELD, EUGENE. Autograph manuscript of an "old English ballad" entitled "Ye Divell: & Ye Miller Hys Wiffe," n.d. [1887]. 5 pages, 4to, 65 lines in 13 stanzas, written on rectos only of four leaves of parchment-like paper, the text of the poem in black ink and marginal "annotations" in red, each leaf inlaid to a larger sheet, bound with an engraved portrait in green morocco gilt, t.e.g., cover scuffed, spine worn. [With:] Autograph letter signed ("Field") to Ticknor, Chicago, 5 August 1887, 1 page, 4to, forwarding "Another of the old English ballads. The woods seem to be full of them. One of our leading citizens told me today that Chicago was getting so damned literary he'd have to move out to Omaha... Do not let the enclosed ballad get into print..." (2)
