GUNSTON, DANIEL. Daniel Gunston's Jests, &c. In two Parts... Many Originals, never printed before. (--...the Second Part). London: John Fuller 1780. Small 8vo, 153 x 90mm. (6 x 3 1/2in.), calf gilt, g.e., by Riviere, covers detached. FIRST EDITION, separate pagination, engraved frontispiece to each part (identical save for one-line legend added under portrait in Part II), collation: Part I: A2 B-D4 E2 F4 G2 H4; Part II: A4 B2 C4 D2 E4 F2 G4 H2. APPARENTLY UNIQUE as a complete work. British Library owns a copy of Part II with a mutilated title (see ESTC); not in NUC.
Both parts were evidently issued either concurrently or at nearly the same time since a list on pp. 43-46 of Part II of "New and Choice Conundrums" has its "Solutions to the Conundrums" occupying pp. [45]-46 of Part I. Also, a leaf explaining the publisher, John Fuller's "Policy of Insurance for the Irish State Lottery, 1780" occurs as A2 in Part I and as H2 (i.e. the final leaf) in Part II.
Provenance: Volume filled out with 6 additional leaves at the front and 16 leaves at the back containing 32 pages of manuscript jests, poems, inscriptions, etc. all by one unidentified late eighteenth-century hand; also extracts from periodicals (one dated 1783, another 1786) pasted to 3 pages -- Henry and Alfred Henry Huth, bookplate (sale, Sotheby 9 June 1913, lot 3414, 5gns., Dobell).
