FIRST EDITION, one of 500 copies printed (and one of 350 of the English issue), Carter & Sparrow's "B" label. Laid in original envelope tipped in at front is an autograph letter signed ("A.E. Housman") from the poet to Miss Jessie B. Rittenhouse in New York, Trinity College, Cambridge, 3 October 1923, 1 page, 8vo, integral blank leaf, creased from folding: "I do not give permission for the inclusion of poems from A Shropshire Lad in anthologies; but in America the book is not copyright, and so no permission is needed..."
