MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, i + 298 + i leaves, modern pencilled foliation 1-21, 1-274 (in tens, with errors) used here for reference, collation not possible because of tight binding, 89 x 58mm. Small strips of vellum missing from the margins of ff. 113, 205, 216, 223 (probably original defects), several borders slightly shaved, occasional slight flaking of ink, faint offset from several borders, slight stains in margins of first and last leaves, the last leaves somewhat darkened with rust stains in blank areas, rust holes in the margins of f. 273 and f. 274, a small hand-colored engraving of St. Catherine of Siena and Christ affixed to f. 273r, eighteenth-century additions on some blank leaves and occasionally in margins, apparently complete and in very good condition.

Red velvet, very worn, over wooden boards, one brass clasp.

Texts
Calendar, emphasizing Dominican feasts: Translation of St. Thomas (blue, Jan. 28), St. Thomas Aquinas (blue, March 7) with octave, Translation of St. Mary Magdalen (red, March 19), St. Vincent Ferrer (blue, April 5), St. Peter Martyr (blue, April 29), Translation of St. Peter (blue, May 7), Translation of St. Dominic (red, May 24), St. Mary Magdalen (blue, July 22), St. Dominic (Dominici patris nostri, blue, Aug. 5) with octave, the Eleven Thousand Virgins (blue, Oct. 21); followed by calendar tables (ff. 1r-14r; ff. 14r-20v blank but ruled, f. 21 originally blank, eighteenth-century notes on f. 15 and f. 21).
Proper of the Season, from Vespers of Saturday before the first Sunday in Advent through the twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost, followed by the office for the dedication of a church (ff. 1r-9lv; f. 92 blank but ruled). Proper of the Saints, from the Vigil for the feast of St. Andrew through the feast of St. Saturninus (ff. 94r-193v; f. 194 blank but ruled). Common of the Saints (ff. 195r-249v; 2 unnumbered leaves blank but ruled, with eighteenth-century additions). Ferial offices for Monday through Saturday (ff. 250r-267v). Litany, with St. Mary Magdalen twice at the head of the virgins (ff. 267v-271v; ff. 272-274 blank but ruled, sixteenth-century additions on f. 272r). Dated by the original scribe Anno domini 1494 (f. 271v).

A small pocket breviary written for Dominican use, as indicated both by the calendar and by the offices distinguished with special ornamentation. The latter include, in addition to Easter, Ascension and Pentecost: Saints Andrew, Agnes, Vincent Ferrer, Peter Martyr, Mary Magdalen and Dominic, and also the Assumption of the Virgin, the Eleven Thousand Virgins, and All Saints. The emphasis on Mary Magdalen and the Eleven Thousand Virgins suggest that the manuscript was intended for use by women and possibly for a community located in or near Cologne; certainly by the eighteenth century it belonged to nuns.

Provenance: Written in 1494 for Dominican use, perhaps for women. -- Gift of a German prioress, 1705 (inscription, f.21r: Dise liebe buchlein hat mir mein herz liebste Fraw Mueter Priorin Maria Catharina Conscia...den 3 tag dezember 1705...).
