Essai historique, philosophique et pittoresque sur les danses des morts, Rouen 1852, 2 vols. in one, large 8vo, brown morocco over bevelled wooden boards, painted cuir-ciselé panel inset on upper cover showing Adam and Eve flanking Death as a skeleton whose outstretched arms are the apple tree branches around which is twined the snake, upper and lower border of skulls and snakes, a different panel with large lozenge composed of a skull at the center of thistle leaves and flowers intertwined with snakes, spine in four compartments gilt-lettered and with inlaid green, gray and yellow skull and thistle leaves at center, turn-ins similarly inlaid, red and green brocade liners, marbled inner endleaves, t.e.g., others gilt on the rough, gilt-stamped "Ch. Meunier [19]28" on upper turn-in, upper panel unglued, slight wear to extremities, half morocco chemise, lacking slipcase, FIRST EDITION, second issue with vol. 1 title dated 1852, 54 etched and wood-engraved plates, numerous wood-engraved vignettes; with an Autograph letter signed by the author to C. Leber in Paris, Rouen, 16 June 1833, 2 1/2 pp., 4to, bound in at front, concerning the intended publication of the present work (first published posthumously in 1851), and 4 small dance-of-death- related prints mounted on flyleaves at front and back; Gustave Mouravit copy, ink-stamped monograms on titles and inscription on front flyleaf, explaining the above inserts and characterizing the binding (commissioned by him) as "l'une des plus belles et les plus caractéristiques de Ch. Van West" on upper turn-in, joints rubbed, LIMITED EDITION, NUMBER I OF 7 COPIES ON JAPON ANCIEN, containing 2 original signed gouache drawings for the illustrations (one extra to this issue, with a presentation inscription from the artist to Paul Marteau), 8 original pencil and crayon drawings on waxed paper, from 6 to 9 extra suites of the etchings in successive states and on various papers, 2 extra suites of the woodcuts, all proofs signed and numbered by the artist, and the original ink and pastel binding maquette (with a loosely inserted tracing), 7 color etchings, 16 woodcut head- and tail-piece vignettes by H.
