Lot Essay

The Prestwich, Lancs. hoard of 1,065 coins, mainly of Henry I and Stephen, was deposited c.1142-5 and found in 1972. 400 coins were retained in various museums and 334 were sold in auction in 1974. The remainder were returned to the finders and most subsequently dispersed, but the above group was retained by one of the finders (see Coin Hoards, RNS 1975, vol. 1 p.92)
