NORTHCOTE, JAMES. Autograph manuscript of "Fable: The Wolf and the Lamb," n.d. [c.1830?]. 1 page, folio, 320 x 190mm. (12 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.), 36 lines, titled at head, several minor marginal tears. Apparently one of Northcote's verse fables for children, commencing: "A Wolf, who craving sought for food A harmless Lamb at distance view'd And eager spring to seize the prize With furious look, and longing eyes, 'Alas! exclaim'd the trembling Lamb, 'Think, sir, how innocent I am; 'Why, cruel, should you thus pursue 'Those who can never injure you?..." Accompanied by a contemporary engraved portrait of the author. Northcote (1746-1831) published two collections entitled One Hundred Fables, Original and Selected (London, 1828) and Fables, Original and Selected. Second Series, (London, 1833), both embellished with wood engravings after Northcote and another artist, W. Harvey.
