The poem originally consisted of 33 lines in 7 stanzas and was written for Francis Jane Sitwell ("Claire") in November 1873. "The first thirteen lines of the poem were first published in Underwoods, 1887... the remaining nineteen lines were first published in Three Short Poems, London, 1898," (Beinecke Catalogue, pp. 1831 and 2013).
