WALPOLE, Sir HUGH. Autograph manuscript of the novel Captain Nicholas. Edinburgh, Brishton, and Brackenburn, "Christmas Eve 1931" - "August 20, 1933, 7:30 p.m." Approximately 1359 pages, plus 7 preliminary pages, 4to, written on rectos in various blue and black inks, some lettering in red ink for titles, chapter headings, etc., with very light corrections/revisions by Walpole, three punch holes in gutter of each leaf, bound in 3 vols., 4to, blue morocco gilt, spines gilt-lettered, t.e.g., by Roger De Coverly, spines a shade darkened and one a bit scuffed, dated at the beginning and end of each volume by Walpole. The author's working title for the novel, first published in London in 1934, was The Spring Evening; towards the end of the manuscript the title became Captain Nicholas. (3)
