WATSON, Sir WILLIAM. Autograph manuscripts of eighteen poems. "Ainsdale, near Liverpool" and elsewhere [late 1870s & early 1880s -- the only dated poem being "9 July 1880"]. Together 17 pages, 8vo-4to (mostly 4to or small 4to), all in ink on different kinds of paper, all fair copies (but two with a couple of revisions), two poems signed in full, two signed with initials, Watson's return address at top of the first poem, most of the poems identified as to publication, etc., in a different hand in pencil, bound with calligraphic title and index pages in red and black ink in blue morocco gilt, red and green morocco onlay in corners forming a leaf design, front cover and spine gilt-lettered "Poems by William Watson The Original Manuscripts," blue morocco gilt inner dentelles, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, blue cloth fleece-lined folding case. Five of the poems were published in three of Watson's early books: The Prince's Quest, 1880 (for the first manuscript poem, "Beethoven," published slightly altered as "Schubert"); Lacrimae Musarum, 1892; and Poems, 1892. The others are apparently unpublished. Other titles of poems are: "When Birds were Songless," "The Flight of Youth," "Shadows," seven poems under the heading "Poems on Poems," and seven poems listed as "Juvenilia." For Watson see Stetz & Lasner, England in the 1880s, nos. 205-206.
