Lot Essay

A diverse cast of characters come together in this painting: a red- robed figure -- a King? -- a masked Pierrot, a formally dressed couple, and a Cupid who has just alit in their midst. The purpose of their meeting is not entirely clear, but because the others are bowing deferentially to Cupid, their attitudes underscore the title Love the Conqueror. Behind them is a large painting that appears to be Veronese's the Rape of Europa.

Roy Brindley and Selina Evans will include this painting in their forthcoming La Touche catalogue raisonn.
