AN INLAID LACQUER EXPORT CHEST
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (LATE 16TH-EARLY 17TH CENTURY)
Of square section fitted with a drop-down rectangular front panel which reveals the two long and two short drawers within, decorated in black lacquer, inlaid mother of pearl and gold hiramaki-e with different motifs on each of the exterior panels, birds perched on flowering camellias on the lid, leafy loops of vines on the rectangular back panel, grape vines on the right side panel and a butterfly and chrysanthemums on the left side panel, the drop-front decorated with flowering plum branches and the underside of the drop-front with leafing vines accented in nashiji, the drawers decorated with matching leafy vines and paulownia within squiggle-line borders, fitted with gilt copper mounts chased with plum florets--16 5/8 x 14 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. (42.2 x 37 x 23.7 cm.), some surface losses and wear, cracks on all panels
