EDO PERIOD (EARLY 19TH CENTURY), INSCRIBED HANABUSA ITCHO SHO SAKU [MADE AFTER A DESIGN BY HANABUSA ITCHO]
Of oval section decorated in gold and colored takamaki-e with a scene of a warrior on a black horse with red trappings descending a cliff toward the sea and boats, shown on the reverse with sails up and flags waving, edges of rocks and clouds in kirigane, ground kinji, interior cases nashiji; fitted with an ivory netsuke carved in the form of a sage riding a tortoise and holding a large bowl, signed Gyokuichi and a bead-form aventurine ojime--4 in. (10 cm.) high
