Of rectangular shape in two tiers, each fitted with an inkwell in removable lacquer frame rendered in dense nashiji on a roiro-nuri ground, the sides decorated in roiro embellished with coral-like clusters in red, green, yellow and mauve which is repeated on the lid, the cover additionally ornamented with two inlaid soft-metal figures of south sea islanders gathering a coral branch with a gilt rope, the coral branch of natural red coral and inlaid, and the surrounding rocks in burnished and dulled gold takamaki-e, metal mounts, date and inscription underside of lid - 8 1/8 x 3 1/4 x 2 1/8 in.
