In 1909 Liebermann bought a piece of land on the shore of Berlin's Wannsee lake where he built a summerhouse and studio closely modelled on Dutch patrician houses. The large garden which stretched down to the lake and paths along the water were the artist's pride and joy and Liebermann's favortie local in which to paint after the First World War. The rich variety of colors and the striking light of Wannsee provided Liebermann with the ideal impressionist subjects for a new series of paintings.
As a mature artist, Liebermann's most expressive post-war paintings are characterised by tremendous light effects and a lively Impressionist handling of paint. The artist's Wansee paintings, like Grosse Seestrasse in Wannsee mit Spaziergangern, are characterised by painterly brushstrokes that are vivacious and expressive and a palette reminiscent of French Impressionist painting.
