After studying at Dresden and Weimar, Paul Baum spent 1894 in Knocke on the Belgian coast. It was here that he met Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac, Theo van Rysselberghe and came into contact with the group of Belgian artists known as Les XX.
The influence of these encounters appeared in Baum's painting starting in 1896 with his adoption of a divisionist method of paint application closely akin to Pointilism. In 1902, he began to exhibit with the French Neo-Impressionists in shows organized by the dealers Cassier and Flechtheim and at the annual Berlin Secession.
