Lot Essay

This drawing is a study for the central Gorgon at the left side of the 'Hostile Powers' section of Klimt's Beethovenfries, 1902 (Dobai no. 127; The Erich Lederer Collection, sterreichische Galerie, Vienna). This decorative frieze was painted in three sections for adjacent walls at the Viennese Secession building, in conjunction with the 1902 exhibition of Max Klinger's statue of Beethoven.
