Lot Essay

The present works are the original collages created for Vanishing Animals, a book by Kurt Behnishke published by Springer/Verlag in 1986. During the 1980s, Warhols continued to explore his interest in still life, portraiture and popular culture, updating his subjects to reflect dominant social preoccupations. As with his numerous society portraits, and as in his prior series Endangered Species (1983), Warhol here presents the animals as "celebrities."
