A SHINSHINTO TANTO
LATE EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
Sugata: hira-zukuri with iori-mune and strong uchizori; nagasa: 8 sun, 3 bu (25.0 cm.). Jihada: itame. Hamon: ko-gonome in nioi. Tang (nakago) shape (keitai): slightly uplifted, ubu and with a dry, brown patina; yasurime: higaki; nakagojiri: shallow kuri-jiri; mekugi-ana: one; signature (mei), mumei.
Aikuchi-goshirae: widely ribbed saya lacquered a deep red; all mounts (o-kojiri, kurikata, kogai, koiguchi, uragawara, kozuka, fuchi-kashira) are executed in silver and delicately engraved with stylized scrolling foliage and a butterfly mon, unsigned; the white-wrapped tsuka is fitted with a pair of gold menuki in the form of butterfly mon--length of koshirae 40 cm.
Accompanied by a kanteisho for the koshirae, no. 3432, dated Heisei 1 (1989), issued by the Nihon Token Hozon Kai.
