AN INLAID CELADON JAR
KORYO DYNASTY (13TH CENTURY)
The large jar of ovoid form compressed at the front and back to form straight walls and set on a flat foot with recessed base, well inlaid in white and black slip with a large, four-lobed lotus medallion on each of the flat sides reserved on a field of clouds, cranes and circular lotus medallions, each of the large medallions composed of four pointed petals enclosing a stand of budding lotus in a pond and bordered by a collar of linked rui, the ground composed of clouds inlaid in white slip interspersed at the rounded side walls with five circular lotus medallions separated by flying white and black cranes, the foot ringed by a band of fretwork supporting a wider band of lappets and the neck encircled by a wide band of chrysanthemum scroll, covered overall by a glossy, celadon glaze, thick and slightly emerald in places, with random long crackle--10 3/8 in. (26.3 cm.) high, replacement neck
