[MANUSCRIPTS -- POLITICAL POETRY]. [France, after 1723]. 87 pages, small 8vo, 19th-century pastepaper boards, red morocco title piece on spine. A manuscript copy of the first three odes of Lagrange-Chancel's famous invective against Philippe Duc d'Orlans, Regent of France from 1715-1723. The first edition, published in 1723, contained only these three odes, the only ones admitted to by the author; a fourth ode was added later, as were the "Notes instructives" that appear on the rectos of this manuscript, the poem itself being transcribed on the versos. A note on page 9 refers to Louis XV as "presently reigning"; thus the manuscript was written afer 1723, the year of his coronation. It may date from the middle years of the century, as the work circulated for a long time in clandestine manuscript copies. -- [DEHANTE]. "L'Orlanisme, Peme en Dix Chants, par **... A Philadelphie, et se vend Paris auprs de l'escalier de la Conciergerie, ou au pied de la statue de la Libert]ae, place de la Rvolution". [Paris?] 1795. [2] 316 pp., folio, plus 2 leaves of erased or faded text following the first section title, containing the "Avertissement" (a 19th-century transcription loosely inserted) contemporary catspaw sheep, covers gilt panelled, spine gilt (worn). A history in verse of the first years of the French Revolution, concluding with the execution of the Duc d'Orlans in November 1793, by a supporter of the monarchy, who traces the horrors of the Revolution to the liberal Philippe-galit and his followers.
