Lot Essay

Arthur & Bond of Yokohama catered to the Western market. Their silverware made frequent use of the iris pattern, such as an extensive late-nineteenth century silver dressing table set which was offered at Christie's, London, June 16-17, 1997, lot 350.

Arthur & Bond's iris pattern may have influenced the 307-piece table service assembled by Shreve & Company, San Francisco, between 1907 and 1917. This service is now in the collection of the De Young Museum, San Francisco.
