Cylindrical, with circular lid decorated with green and white paper depicting leaves opening to a floral paper-lined interior above a conforming body with applied transfer-printed eagle with an American flag enclosed by wreaths and E.PLURIBUS UNUM on a white ground with wavy vertical decoration in blue, red and yellow, the base with pencil inscription M.Blair

Lot Essay

This bandbox is distinct for its vibrant abstract use of color surrounding a more formal lithographed eagle. A related box is in the collection of the Shelburne Museum and is illustrated in Carlisle, Hat Boxes and Band Boxes at Shelburne Museum (Shelburne, VT, 1960), p. 59, No. 173.
