William M. S. Doyle (1769-1828) was born in and spent his career painting portraits, portrait miniatures and silhouettes in Boston and its vicinity. Doyle is also known to have worked with the miniaturist Henry Williams (see lot 145 and 147), (G and W, p. 187; and S and G, pp. 52-54).

Records of the Second Church of Christ in Abington, Massachusetts list an Eliza Reed, daughter of Phillip and Mary (Yewell) Reed baptized on 7 May 1809 along with siblings Jane and Phillip Reed. Eliza's age at her death in 1826 indicates that she was born in 1809. Accordingly the Eliza Reed from Abington, Massachusetts may be the same sitter illustrated here.
