Comprising one marble sample stone, rectangular with four carved facades featuring a dove, a hand pointing to an open-faced book inscribed Holy Bible, a sleeping lamb, and two clasped hands; together with a carved marble baby's hand, inscribed at wrist Anden; Austria Gruppe 1876, on a rectangular dark marble plinth; a man's hand, on rectangular marble plinth, marked G. Chase; a woman's hand, inscribed at wrist, Ezekiel Rome 1891, on rectangular marble plinth; and a woman's hand with bracelet and wedding rings, inscribed at wrist 1870, on a rectangular pillow-carved plinth

Lot Essay

Moses Ezekiel (1844-1917), whose name is inscribed on one the carved marble hands illustrated here, was born in Richmond, Virginia. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Ezekiel served as Confederate soldier in the Civil War. Prior to relocating to Rome, where he spent most of his professional career, Ezekiel studied and travelled in Berlin and France.
