Largely self-taught, though receiving some training from Gilbert Stuart, Sarah Goodridge began her highly successful career opening a portrait studio in 1820. She sought commissions as far away as Washington, D.C. in 1829 and 1842, and continued painting portraits in miniature until her death in 1853. (G and W, p. 265; Johnson, pp. 125-126; and S and G, p. 65.)
