While no information is available regarding Seth Cole, Jr. or his artistic career, his painting and drawing series off the coast of Peru provide insight into Victorian culture. The series in general attests to the era's interest in travel, exploration, discovery, and even a sense of romantic curiosity. In particular, the Island of Juan Fernandes (Chile) was the real site of the four-year stranding of Alexander Selkirk, an early 18th century Scottish mariner whose highly celebrated lone survival and dramatic rescue is considered the basis for Daniel Defoe's epic adventure, Robinson Crusoe. This story enjoyed a particular revival during the 19th century, with a variety of material forms such as lighting devices depicting scenes from the story.
