Born in Milton, Connecticut, Anson Dickinson (1779-1852) began his almost half-century career painting portrait miniatures in 1802 in New Haven. By 1804, Dickinson made New York City the base of his portrait miniature painting, traveling in search of commissions to Canada, Albany, Buffalo, Charleston, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., as well as his home environs of New Haven and Litchfield, Connecticut.
