Lot Essay

His career spanning the course of almost a half-century, Moses B. Russell (1810-1884) worked predominantly as a portrait miniaturist, though occassionally also producing full size portraits in oil and daguerreotypes. The majority of his working life was in Boston, though between 1854 and 1861, he worked in New York City and Philadelphia. For over two decades beginning in 1834, Russell exhibited at the Boston Atheneum, the Boston Art Association and the Boston Mechanics Society, as well as the American Institute of the City of New York.
