cover 12c Black (17), two horizontal pairs, ample to large margins except one pair slightly in at top, grid cancels, used on fresh neat orange buff cover to Talcahuano, Chile, addressed to a ship captain "care of the American Consul, Talcahuano, Chile", red "24" credit h.s. struck twice, one ties one of the pairs, the other "24" h.s. changed in ms. to "25", which is inexplicable as the cover paid the 48c rate to Chile by American Packet and then British Packet via Panama, very fine, a gorgeous cover to a very rare destination, one of only three known 1851 Issue covers to Chile, ex Seven Oaks photo
Sale room notice
The manuscript "25" represents "25 Centavos," Chile's internal postage due for a double rate letter. The estimate remains the same.
