on piece 3c Dull Red (11), two vertical pairs arranged in block format, large margins to slightly in, grid of small squares cancels, tied by French transit on 1857 cover (front) to Madrid, Spain, addressed to "Mr. B. Smith, Secretary of Legation of the U.S. [sic], Madrid, Spain", "Picolata, Fla. Apr 16" c.d.s., red British transit, red French "PP" in circle h.s., ms. "2 pesetas" due mark, magenta ms. "38" rate mark, apparently sent by the 21c rate to Spain via British Open Mail by American Packet although only partially paid by the 12c in postage, the front has been mounted on an unused buff envelope to improve appearance, somewhat defective and repaired, with only a tiny portion of the address actually drawn-in, all markings are intact, believed to be a unique 1851 Issue usage to Spain, as such an exceptional rarity photo
