cover 10c Green types I, III (13, 15), single of former, two singles of latter, clear to huge margins except slightly in on one type III stamp, tied by red "Trenton, N.J. Jul 10 1857" c.d.s. cancels on fresh 1857 cover to Hong Kong addressed to "Lieut Earl English, U.S. Sloop Levant, Care of the American Consul, Hong Kong, China", red "N.York Am. Pkt. Paid" exchange h.s. deleted by red grid and pencil, ms. "via English Mail Steamer", red London transit, magenta ms. "12" credit (to Britain), Hong Kong backstamp, it appears that this cover paid the 30c rate to Hong Kong via French Mail (the U.S.-French Postal Convention of Mar. 2, 1857), but the ms. "12" credit is normally associated with Great Britain rather than France (a 6c credit if carried by American Packet), obviously there was some confusion in the N.Y. Exchange Office as well, very fine, a scarce 30c rate to a better destination franked with a scarce 10c type I stamp photo
