1959 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SL ROADSTER
Chassis No. 002395
Engine No. TBA
Silver with red leather interior
Engine: six cylinder, in-line, 2,996cc., 215bhp; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: front, independent, coil springs, rear, independent swing axle, coil springs; Brakes: hydraulic disc all round. Left hand drive.
The stunning 300SL was a direct descendant of the racing Mercedes-Benz 300 of 1952. Rudi Uhlenhaut had visited Le Mans in 1951 and was impressed with the XK Jaguars, realizing they were closely related to production cars and therefore decided that Mercedes should follow the same route with their new 300 series cars. The first production models were the Gullwing coupes, of which 1,400 were built between 1954 and 1957. At the request of the American importer, Hoffman, a roadster version was developed and this replaced the coupe in May 1957. Some 1,858 examples of these were made, capable of 140-160mph (dependent on rear axle ratio), and they are in many ways more practical cars than the Gullwing.
This attractive silver example has been part of a select collection of motor cars; it was first imported into the US by a Mercedes agent in Pennyslvania and remained in this family ownership until the 1970's. We are told it is a three owner car from new and the present indicated mileage is showing 67,500. The Mercedes was repainted about eight years ago and is still to a very high standard. Recent mechanical work has included work on the brakes, gearbox and clutch with some $9,000 spent in June '97 on the engine - this work including a crank re-grind and subsequent rebuild. As such, it is described as not needing any mechanical work at all. Indeed, a specialist garage claimed that it is in excellent condition throughout. The interior and brightwork appear to be all in very good order and the convertible top is in excellent condition.
These fine looking Mercedes roadsters are capable machines and always attract admiring looks, whether as entries in any of the numerous long distance touring events that are so popular today, or simply on the open road.
