This exotic garniture typifies the imagination of the marchand-bijoutier Lazare Duvaux. As his Livre-Journal reveals, he was amongst the first to combine Vincennes porcelain flowerheads with gilt-bronze - even Oriental lacquer - to create whimsical objets de luxe for the Court, and it was he who supplied the closely related pair of pot-pourris vases to Madame de Pompadour, which are now in the Louvre.
A Japanese black and gold lacquer brle parfum of closely related form to the flanking elements of this garniture was sold from the collection of the late Ren Fribourg, Sotheby's London, 17 October 1963, lot 758, whilst a further pair in red lacquer was sold anonymously at Palais Gallira, Paris, 26 May 1972, lot 51. A similar pot-pourri is illustrated in P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dors Franais du XVIIIe Sicle, France, 1987, p. 127, ill. 165.
