Circa 1750, in the style of Philips Wouwerman (circa 1619-1668)
Of waved rectangular form, painted overall en grisaille with a courtly couple returning on horseback from a day's hawking, a pair of peasants by the side of the road, in an extensive picturesque landscape, the hinged top enclosing a red-painted interior

Lot Essay

A spa toilet-box with very similar decoration from the BASF Lacquer Museum, Cologne, was exhibited in Oriental and European Lacquer from the BASF Lacquer Museum, Cologne, London, 1977, p. 121, no. 199.
