Each carved in relief with a harbor scene, one inscribed PORT DE BORDEAUX VU DU/QUAI DES FARINES and framed in a contemporary gilt-bronze circular frame with ring-handle, the other inscribed Premiere vue de Marseille execute sur le tour par Compignie Tourneur du Roi A PARIS d'APRES LE TABLEAU ORIGINAL de M. Vernet Peintre de sa Majeste

Thomas Compign, tabletier du Roi in 1773

Compign is known to have signed his works Compignie, as in the current example. Two plaquettes by Compign with identical views of Bordeaux and Marseilles are illustrated in 'Compign: Peintre et Tabletier du Roy', Villa Muse Fragonard, Exhibition Catalogue, June-July 1991, p. 69, no. 1 and p. 76 no. 11 respectively.
